House, now club and flats. c1777-1784 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Wood the Younger.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front with traces of old limewash to basement, rendered and ashlar to rear. Double pile parapeted roof hipped to left, Welsh slate to front and rear, with coped party wall to right with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots to right shared with No.14 Catharine Place (qv), roof covering to small two storey range to left not visible behind parapet.
PLAN: Building at south end of west range to Catharine Place breaks forward slightly to form terminating pavilion to terrace and has small single bay range set back slightly to left, now two storey, probably raised in C19, staircase to rear.
EXTERIOR: Main range four storeys and basement, three-windows with two storey single window range to left. First floor has three plate glass horned sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices and lowered moulded stone sills on console brackets, small range to left has plate glass sash in plain reveal with stone sill. Second floor has three plate glass horned sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. Third floor has three plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, similar to window in range to left. Basement has two six/six sashes in plain reveals with stone sills with wrought iron window guards with shaped heads to bars, ashlar extension in area now has blocked doorway, no area steps. Band course over ground floor to right with incised street name CATHARINE PLACE, modillion cornice at former eaves over second floor, hollow moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet, to left moulded cornice over ground floor at probable former eaves, moulded coping to parapet over second floor. Left side, entrance front, first floor has in smaller range one C19 horned sash with coloured and etched glass borders in plain reveal with stone sill. Second floor has three blind windows with stone sills with six/six glazing painted on. Ground floor has one six/six sash in plain reveal with stone sill with wrought iron window guard with shaped heads to bars to left, two blind windows with stone sills to right, to centre left six-panel door with flush reeded and fielded panels with three-pane overlight in pedimented Doric doorcase with wrought iron lampholder. C20 door to side of rear extension. Plinth, moulded cornice over ground floor, moulded coping to parapet of small additional range, upper mouldings of modillion cornice from front continued to side, coped parapet to roof. Rear elevation has six/six sash to second half-landing of staircase, otherwise C19 and C20 windows, C20 single storey extension.
INTERIOR: Partially inspected by Bath Council 1981. Early c19 white marble fireplace. Fine mouldings in ground floor front room, early C19 fireplace with interesting cupboards either side in the alcoves with two four-panelled doors and four draws beneath, and classic pediment detail above.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings with shaped heads on limestone bases.
