Description

VINEYARDS
656-1/31/1775 (West side)

Raised pavement, revetment wall,
steps and railings

GV II

Raised pavement, revetment wall, steps and railings fronting the Vineyards. Later C18 with mid-C19 embellishment. Rough limestone ashlar revetment wall, Pennant stone paving and wrought iron railings. Spear-headed railings with cast iron balls below lower rail extend approx 550m from south to north. At its highest point at centre (approx 3m), two flights of steps rise from each side of platform recessed back from street. The more ornamental stretches of railings date from the mid-C19. In face of low wall which fronts onto the road are various and numerous openings for doors and windows, leading into or lighting the storage spaces under the broad footway above. This unusual feature, taking advantage of the sloping site, was constructed as part of the terracing on which The Vineyard stands.
