Detached house, now a home for the elderly. Late C18 with mid C19 additions.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, rubblestone to the right return, hipped slate roof with moulded stacks.
PLAN: Double-depth plan with a C19 stepped-forward left wing and rear additions.
EXTERIOR: Two-phase front comprising a nine-bay symmetrical section with central canted bay, to which has been added the projecting three bay left wing. Two storeys; Coped parapet and cornice returned to the right. A ground floor cornice and lintel frieze are continued on the left wing that has a separate hipped roof and stacks to each side. To the centre of the main block is a C19 taller, shallow three-storey canted entrance bay with a pavilion roof, low coped parapet, cornice, six/six-pane sash windows to the second floor, a coved cornice and tall plate glass windows to the first floor. A ground floor platband over a stone doorcase with a shallow-pitched gable has a segmental arch and double three-panel doors flanked by similar windows. Other windows to the front are plate glass sashes with sliding louvred shutters.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: A flight of stone steps runs up from the lawn to the entrance bay.
HISTORY: The house is known to have been owned by a Mr H. Atwood in July 1794, possibly connected with the builder Thomas Warr Atwood. Numerous alterations have taken place in recent times.
