south of the Municipal Golf Course

Piers, railings and plinths to south side of the municipal golf course. Mid/late C19 (possibly 1879 when High Common passed into Bath Corporation ownership). Bath stone piers, wrought iron railings and ashlar plinths. Extending approximately 400m, spear-headed railings on low wall forming plinth are articulated by square section piers approx 3m high with cornice band and coved cornice immediately above upper rail. Caps are steeply gabled, plain fronts are framed by projecting edges of side panels that roll over into scroll at top and have rows of overlapping laurel leaves in fish-scale pattern to slopes. Each pier has circular panel to front, upper half recessed into cornice band and lower part with raised surround, some have raised Gothic letter E, H or R carved into the centre. Toward west end are double gates; railings terminate at simpler pier to west end. This very impressive ensemble of railings is in a High Gothic manner, contrasting sharply with the style of Victoria Park and the surrounding architecture: as such it expresses the official tastes of High Victorian Bath.
