House, now shop. c1761-1765 with early C20 additions. Possibly by Thomas Jelly, shopfront by J. Foster, shopfitter, 1906, extended to left 1909.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, now painted, to front, ashlar to rear, double pile parapeted mansard roof with double Romans to upper slopes, Welsh slate to lower, with coped party wall to right with two ashlar stacks with some early clay pots.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys. First floor has three-plate glass horned sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices with pediment to centre, lowered sills not visible behind shopfront. Second floor has three two/two sashes in eared ovolo moulded architraves rising from stone sills. Ground floor has projecting timber shopfront of 1906, by J Foster and Son, extended 1909 and 1915, with plate glass windows flanking recessed glazed door with frieze of small panes over all. To left and right square plan piers, glazed to form further window display, support fascia and dentil cornice incorporating blind box. No openings to basement. Two single dormers with six/six sashes in moulded architraves. Modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation partially visible has eight/eight sash to second floor, two single dormers with six/six horned sashes, long extension to rear incorporates former mews building with parapeted roof with felt covered lantern light, rear elevation has one blind window to first floor.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
HISTORY: In use as a shop since 1832, the present front was built for W. H. Smith 1906 and extended to left in 1909 to include the house door frontage.
