Pair of houses. c1840 with late C19 alterations.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, shallow pitched hipped slate roof with wide eaves and long double stack to centre of party wall.
PLAN: Double depth plans, wider to rear, with rear extensions.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and semi-basement, symmetrical three-window range including blind windows to party wall. Painted reveals to plate glass sash windows, returned second floor sill band, splayed moulded architraves to lower floors, those to ground floor with cornices on consoles over returned platband, parapets and cornices to single storey enclosed porches toward rear of returns. No.7 has later C19 bolection moulded four-panel door and overlight in glazed porch with swept roof. No.8 has single storey porch and four-panel door.
INTERIORS: Not inspected
HISTORY: The road lies along the route of the old footpath connecting Bath and Bathwick. Originally this area was earmarked for a major development called Frances Square (marked on Chantry¿s plan of 1793, and on Donne¿s plan of 1810). After a substantial delay this suburban development, greatly reduced in density, was proceeded with in a characteristic Late Georgian manner. The villas are shown on Cotterell¿s 1851 plan of Bath, and are recorded as being "newly erected" in the Bath Guide for 1853.
