DESCRIPTION: it is a three-sided structure, constructed of brick and timber with a plain clay tile pitched roof, in the form of a shelter. There are vine carvings to the bargeboards of the gabled roof. It has an open doorway with a pointed-arched head and incised spandrels; the dates 1939 and 1945 are inscribed on the horizontal rail above. To either side of the doorway is a stone tablet listing the names of the seven men who died. Inside, on the back wall is a wooden sculpture of the Crucifixion by Loughnan Pendred. It rests on a stone base which is inscribed: THY SIN IS MY PAIN.

History

Affpuddle War Memorial was erected after the end of the Second World War in memory of the seven local men who died during this conflict. It is situated within the churchyard of St Laurence’s Church and was a gift of Sir Ernest Debenham, grandson of William Debenham, the founder of the British department store, who owned most of the land in the area. The memorial takes the form of a shelter or shrine, and the East Anglican craftsman Loughnan Pendred designed the Crucifixion carving within it. Sir Ernest was also responsible for commissioning the sculptor Eric Gill to design the First World War Memorial (listed Grade II*) at nearby Briantspuddle.

Reasons for Listing

Affpuddle War Memorial, which is situated in the churchyard of St Laurence’s Church, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:

* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made during the Second World War;
* Design: a carefully-designed structure that reflects the local vernacular.
