Description

Dated 1824. Pair of 18th century circular polished ashlar piers with alternate rusticated band courses; polished frieze with carved swags; bracketed cornice; surmounted by crouching lions. 2 leaf decorative ironwork gates reading "1W8" and "2D4" (William Dundas 1824). Tooled screen walls with droved margins; moulded ashlar coping.

Statement of Interest

The Cougar Gates, like the rustic bridges in the sunken garden (see separate listing), did not originate at Arniston. Lord Chief Baron Robert Dundas (1758-1819) wrote: "The pillars of that gate...with the two lions on the top of them, stood in front of Mr. Mitchelson's, afterwards Dr. Bennet's, house, in Nicolson Street, and were purchased by me for twenty guineas. They were erected when I was a boy at the High School about 1766 or 1767" (Arniston Memoirs, p 298).
