Statement of Interest

is a good example of the type of vernacular building constructed for farm workers, painted in the locally traditional colours of cream and red. From map evidence it is clear a later horse-engine house once stood to the rear of the range. Hessilhead is a fairly remote, small settlement of which this is probably the best surviving building. Marked as Hessilhead Town on the current maps, the clachan consists of some small cottages, a former saw mill (now ruinous, 2003) and a building used as a school in the 19th century (converted into a dwelling 2003), all next to the Dusk Water. The ruins of Hessilhead Castle lie to the north east. 'Hazelhead' castle is marked on Andrew Armstrong's map of 1775.
