Description

Mid 18th century. 2 storeys, 4 bays plus central 2-bay nepus gable. Central recessed door with wide, chamfered cavetto reveals and bracketed cornice; flanking shopfronts, probably late 19th century. Angle pilasters, straight skews and scrolled skewputs to nepus gable; apex stack missing. Painted ground floor; harl above; moulded eaves cornice.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular fenestration.

Plate glass shopfronts; UPVC replacing timber sash and case windows. Non-traditional tiles replacing slates; straight skews and scrolled skewput to R.

INTERIOR: not seen (2003).

Statement of Interest

In 1980, when the building was listed, it still retained its slate roof and apex stack. It also had a 19th century gabled dormer to the left of the nepus gable. The main elevation has been re-harled in the later 20th century with what is probably cement rather than traditional lime harl and the late 19th century timber sash and case windows have been replaced with out-of-character 'Mackintosh' style uPVC windows. These late 20th century alterations represent gradual erosion of the traditional elements that had survived for as many as 200 years. This building remains significant though as it is an example of a good nepus gabled building of the 18th century, contributing to the character of Beith where once there were many more examples of this type.
