Description

Erected 1846. Square-plan polished ashlar pedestal with
obelisk above. Polished ashlar panel with inscription. Date
on block pediment above. Base of obelisk decorated with
anthemion on 1 face, stylised crests on either side.
Inscription reads: "Erected by public subscription in
affectionate memory of James Wilson a partriotic Scotsman
who suffered death at Glasgow 30th August 1820 for
enunciating those principles of progress and reform by the
adoption of which Great Britain has secured domestic peace
and consolidated her power among the nations. Born at
Strathaven 3rd September 1760."

Statement of Interest

James Wilson was hanged as a ringleader in the 1820 rising.

He organised the Strathaven men. Foundation stone laid 28th

April 1846 by Betty Turnbull
