Description

Mid to later 19th century. L-plan picturesque cottage,
single storey, with attic to main wing and parallel service
cottage. Unfortunate flat-roofed modern extension to S.
Squared and snecked rubble with contrasting ashlar
dressings and base course. Chamfered arrises to
openings.
E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay, symmetrical under
sweeping eaves forming loggia. Boarded door at centre
flanked by bipartites. Decorative timber barge boarding to
gabled porch at centre, and decorative timber
balustrade and brackets to loggia columns. Cobbled
loggia floor.
N (COAST) ELEVATION: gable end to main house with raised
bay at centre; Tripartite windows at ground and 1st
floor with stone bracketted hood slabs. Eaves swept
lower to left by loggia; unusual timber eaves brackets.
Recessed single storey wing to right with former arched
doorway, (altered to windows), timber bracketted gabled
porch. Various windows. Later extension to right with
2 large windows flanking raised battered stack.
Small rectangular plan, gabled single storey cottage to S,
linked to modern extension and main house by modern
additions.
Variety of glazing patterns to casement windows.
Diamond-pane glazing to bipartite left of entrance door.
Plate glass and modern glazing. Ashlar stacks;
2 unusual stacks with moulded gabletted coping. Green
slates. Modern dormer to W of main wing.

Statement of Interest

Formerly part of the Archerfield Estate. Similar style as

Swiss Cottage, Manse Road, Dirleton. Possibly taken from

Loudon's COTTAGE FARM AND VILLA ARCHITECTURE 1842 which

includes close parallels. Secluded location with Fidra to

N. Further service cottage set to SW. Remaining walls of

former steading to NE with raised gable to N.
