Description

J B Dunn, 1910. 2-storey house with single storey and
basement wing, in Cotswold vernacular. Squared and
snecked Rattlebag rubble with contrasting dressings.
1st floor subtly corbelled out at intervals.
S ELEVATION: gabled door bay at centre projecting from
broader recessed gable to left; higher gable to right.
Chamfered door surround with segmentally, arched ashlar
lintel. Roll-moulded square sundial panel above, raised
at centre, small bipartite below gablehead. Stair window
to left gable with transoms, and stepped cill levels.
Recessed outer bay to left with mullioned and transomed
tripartite at ground below low eaves and flat-roofed, slate
hung dormer. 4-light window to 1st floor of gable right
of centre with irregular bipartites below and small lights
under eaves to outer right bay. Advanced piend-roofed
service wing to right, set lower on sloping site.
N ELEVATION: gabled frontage with broad, semi-circular
arched porch recess, off-centre to right with small-paned
tripartite door behind, splayed, canted, piend-roofed
6-light bay at ground to outer left gable. Advanced
outer bay to right with chamfered angles at ground (with
windows) corbelled to square above. Outer bay to left
with window in chamfered bay. Single storey and
basement wing recessed to left. Variety of 2 and 3-light
windows, mullion and transom at ground. Coped stone
parapet to flight of steps, parallel to house leading to
arched porch from terrace below.
Small-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows.
Square lead-paning to stair window. Caithness slates;
stone stacks, swept eaves.
INTERIOR: panelled doors. Decorative cast-iron grates.
Unusual Vitruvian scroll, plaster cornices. Brass door
fittings.
Rubble coped rubble retaining wall. Circular section
gatepiers.

Statement of Interest

Currently serving as Convalescent home. Earliest of a group

of 3 houses in Hill Road using same materials and Arts and

Crafts style, with Corner House and Coldstones (listed

separately). Relieving arches above some 1st floor windows.
