Description

Post 1932. 2-storey, asymmetrical Lorimerian Arts and Crafts house. Harled; ashlar dressings. Variegated random rubble base course. Eaves course. Raised ashlar cills.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 3-bay. Advanced gable bay to left; canted window at ground, with deep parapet, waved to centre; window at 1st floor, in recessed semicircular panel blinded above; slit and ashlar detail in apex. Door to right return; window at 1st floor. Window in recessed porch at ground at centre; window above at 1st floor. Tripartite window in rectangular projection at ground in bay to right, with half-piend slate roof; window above at 1st floor.

W (ENTRANCE) elevation: 3-bay. Doorcase in sawtooth coped advanced panel in centre bay; ovolo-moulded architrave, with ogeed lintel, and long and short quoins with mannered unsquared tails; small window above at 1st floor. Window at ground and 1st floor in bay to left; 1st floor jettied on corbel course; chamfered angle to left at ground, corbelled to square before 1st floor. Asymmetrically gabled bay to right; window at ground and 1st floor to right; slit and ashlar detail in apex. Off-set asymmetrically shouldered and coped chimney-breast between centre and right bays.

N ELEVATION: semicircular-arched stair window breaking eaves in gabled bay at centre; small window to left at ground. 2 windows at ground and window to left at 1st floor in piended bay to right. Flat-roofed single storey wing adjoined in piended bay to left, with door to right to W, and door to N; window to right at 1st floor; off-set chimney-breast to left.

E ELEVATION: 3-bay. Asymmetrically gabled bay to left; window at ground and 1st floor to left; slit and ashlar detail in apex. Windows at ground and 1st floor in bays to centre and right. Off-set asymmetrically shouldered and coped chimney-breast between centre and left bays; lean-to glasshouse adjoined at ground. Bipartite window to single storey wing to right.

Small-pane glazing patterns in sash and case windows. Grey slates to steeply pitched roof with swept eaves. Coped wallhead stacks to W, N and E.

Statement of Interest

This house was built between 1932 and 1949. The detailing is too severely executed for the house to be attributed to Robert Lorimer, but the style is pure Lorimer/Kinross Arts and Crafts, and it may be by T Aikman Swan who continued to work in this vein on leaving Lorimer's office.
