Description

Mid 19th century. Single storey group of 4 pairs of
identical mirrored cottages, arranged in U-plan
configuration, with attic storey breaking eaves. Roughly
squared and snecked pink sandstone with grey ashlar
stugged dressings. Angles of 2 and 3, and 6 and 7
abutting.
FRONT ELEVATION: mirrored pairs, doorways to outer bays
with penticed slab porches, windows to inner bays, 2
small central windows to ground floor only, piend-roofed
dormerheads to attic windows. End gable of Nos 1 and 8
linked into rear wings; blind arched recess in gable
head.
REAR ELEVATIONS: 2 narrow window bays at centre flanked
by gabled extensions. Doorways inserted at nos 2, 3, 5
and 6.
Lying-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows,
with small-pane to rear windows and plate glass to small
front windows. Grey slates; coped ashlar ridge stacks at
centre to front elevations with gable wallhead stacks at
rear.

Statement of Interest

Listed C(S) for group relationship as unusual and

relatively unspoilt example of model farm cottages of

Improvement period. Farm steading to N not included in

current listing. U-plan cottages shown on 1854 map of

Haddingtonshire.
