Description

Early 19th century. Pair of grey ashlar gatepiers with
raised pilaster at centre broken by wider horizontal
bands with chamfered arrises. Scrolled volutes flanking
below neck of ogeed pedestal supporting large ball
finial.
BOUNDARY WALLS: random red rubble sandstone walls with
rubble coping, swept up to gatepiers and marking
policies of Lochend House.

Statement of Interest

Fine gatepiers form the memento of an Anglo Gothic

mansion of which merely a curtain wall remains, endowed

with notable carving and an ornate classical gateway

dated 1684, listed separately. The boundary wall, in

the distinctive local stone runs almost unbroken and in

a prominent line visible from the A1. Lochend Kennels

to W, not included in current listing, but Hallhill

Steading and Cottages (formerly Lochend Mains), listed

separately.
