Description

John Baxter, 1788. N facing 2-storey, symmetrical 5-bay house
with return gable to George Street. Mixed rubble, red
sandstone rubble gables, tooled ashlar sandstone dressings
and margins. Centre door in round-headed recessed entrance
flanked by ground floor windows set behind shallow blind
arcade. Narrow 1st floor windows; paired square-headed attic
windows in return gables; 2-pane glazing.
Moulded coped end stacks; graded Banffshire slate roof.
Modern extension at rear.
INTERIOR: some original field panelled window shutters
survive.
GARDEN WALLS: high rubble garden walls flank George Street.

Statement of Interest

Constructed 1788 as manse; reverted to Duke of Gordon when

the incumbent, Rev John Anderson who combined the post of

Duke's Commissioner with his ministry, demitted charge but

continued as Commissioner resident in 11 The Square (later

named Darnley House). Purchased in 1959 by the Church when

house once again became the parish manse.

Mirrored design with 7 The Square, originally constructed as

town hall and school.
