Later 19th century, 200 feet long vaulted tunnel leading from
road to Cromarty to side (servants) entrance of Cromarty
House. Paved in centre with cobbles each side and occasional
circular air vents. Large vaulted entrance with iron gates
and flanking walls. Inside entrance to left and right, are
vaulted chambers of icehouse type, each with two doorways
(now blocked) checked for closefitting doors.
Cool storage facilities utilised the excavation required to
build this tunnel, and could well have been useful for
tradesmen leaving goods. The (now ruinous) domestic icehouse
is further away from the mansion, in the side of the burial
ground hill.
