Description

Early 19th century. Symmetrical W facing single storey

terrace of 5 3-bay cottages. Rubble, tooled and polished

ashlar dressings. Each dwelling with centre door and flanking

windows, the wider centre cottage slightly advanced, with

further advanced centre door. Each door and window sheltered

by stone canopy; door canopies supported by ashlar pendant

brackets, steeper pitch to window canopies. All windows with lattice-pane casements except later window inserted in

blocked door in 2nd cottage from left (N).

Wide chamfers to door and window openings; all angles also

chamfered with run-off stops at wallhead.

Single rear door to each dwelling, masked at centre by later

timber extension. Coped ridge stacks, 1 original hexagonal

stack survives; piended slate roof.

INTERIOR: simple 2-room plan, each room with bed recess.

Statement of Interest

Built by Darnaway Estates to house salmon fishers, the centre

dwelling for foreman.

Rich salmon fishings at Sluie described in 1792-3, and in

1842 when they were let to Messrs Hogarth and Co of Aberdeen.
