Stump of 1636 lighthouse remains to N of Tarbethole.
Originally resembled small square tower house. Now single
storey with castellated parapet raised over angles. Harled.
Door with roll-moulded architrave, corniced, roll-moulded
panel above with date 1636 and crest, window to right of
door. Newel stair and 17th century chimneypiece with
strapwork decoration above and initials of the Cunningham
family.
Scheduled Ancient Monument, No 887.
Built by John Cunningham of Barnes.
Originally 40 feet high.
Sir Walker Scott persuaded the Northern Lighthouse Board to
keep this part of the old lighthouse "to ruin it a la
pittoresque".
