Description

Later 19th century. Single storey and attic T-plan cottage. Squared and snecked grey granite with contrasting pink tooled granite dressings. Overhanging eaves with decorative timber serpentine bargeboards. Symmetrical 3-bay SE (principal) elevation with steeply gabled porch with ball finial to apex. Pair of distinctive decorative gabled v-plan dormers to attic and flanking rear wing. Later single storey lean-to to W.

Predominantly bipartite windows to ground floor with 4-pane timber sash and case windows, some timber replacements. 10-pane lying panes to dormers. Coped gable stacks, steeply pitched grey slate roof.

INTERIOR: admission not possible at time of site visit (December 2005).

Statement of Interest

Knock Cottage is distinctive for its acute sense of proportion and unusual v-plan lying pane dormers. The steeply pitched roof and deeply overhanging eaves mark it out as a building of some merit. It is particularly well detailed with its timber bargeboards and rustic porch in the local style. The building was already evident in its current plan form on the 1st Edition OS, and, apart from a small addition to the W, retains this plan.

This cottage was the property of the Earls and Dukes of Fife and is still owned by the Mar Estate. It was the home of the head keeper or head forester and is still in residential use. Historically it was one of the biggest buildings in Inverey and occupies a very prominent position on the hill above the village.
