Description

Late 19th century. Polygonal dairy and associated cottage.

DAIRY: single storey polygonal estate building; lined out harled timber lath. Single storey square-plan ancillary building adjoined to E by open timber corridor. Pointed arch openings with timber panelled door to W elevation.

Timber 4-pane sash and case windows. Bell-cast slate roof to dairy with weather vane at apex, overhanging to form rustic verandah supported by timber columns. Slate to square building with central masonry stack.

COTTAGE: single storey 3-bay cottage. Weatherboarded with painted timber diamond lattice screen to N and E elevations. Projecting timber porch with semi-hexagonal arched door opening, lean-to extension obscures S (rear) elevation.

4-pane timber vertically sliding sash and case windows. Larch shingles, corrugated iron to porch and lean-to. Central masonry stack.

INTERIOR: Dairy retains stone flag floor, slate work benches; 2 rooms to ancillary building with shelving for storage and flue for boiler still evident. Cottage is a simple 2-roomed building, retaining original timber panelling.

Statement of Interest

The cottage and dairy have a very distinctive appearance in terms of their form and materials used. The survival of the Dairy in its substantially unaltered state is also remarkable. The buildings were ancillary structures of the second or 'New' Mar Lodge, built in the mid 19th century on higher ground after the 'Old' Mar Lodge was damaged in the 'Muckle Spate' of 1829. As well as being the only buildings to survive from this second estate complex, these buildings also display traditional features of the area, and retain much of their original character. The use of weatherboarding and diamond lattice work is also a particular feature of the buildings of this period on the Mar Estate.
