Description

Dial dated 1616, pedestal dated 1855. Early and finely

detailed freestone facet-headed dial; the basic shape is

cubic with sculptured masks set in at angles. Metal (?iron)

gnomons to each face. The sundial rests upon a red sandstone baluster-pedestal of 1855 with the initials GM. EHM. and the

inscription HORAS NON NUMERO NISI SERENUS.

Statement of Interest

Similar type of dial recorded at Callendar House,

Stirlingshire. MacGibbon and Ross note Troquhain Sundial as

being the earliest known dated dial in Scotland.
