Description

1925-27 incorporating 1868 2-storey bow-fronted house; now a
hotel. All harled with ashlar margins and rusticated quoins;
small-paned sash windows throughout. Used for a time as
seminary with 1965 large W wing by Sutherland Dickie and
Copeland built of exposed brickwork. Original house
rectangular plan, 3-bay S elevation with central door and
shallow outer bows; circa 1925 piended full-width outer bays
added and T-plan wing to NE. E main entrance elevation with
near centre shallow bow breaking through eaves, pedimented
doorway alongside, series of flat-roofed dormers; single
dormer central at S with stacks symmetrically arranged, inner
2 transversely set below ridge; stacks all corniced; slated
roofs.
Interior: mostly 1925-7; extensive good quality timber
panelling, chimneypieces and main stair; good cornice
plasterwork. Modern wing with chapel and gymnasium.

Statement of Interest

Formerly Morison House; opened as a hotel 1985.

Dates from former occupants (1970); plans of 1965 wing held

by present owner. Peddie and Kinnear drawings index in NMRS

includes design for Hetland.
