Description

Circa 1800. 2-storey farmhouse, incorporating earlier fabric;

courtyard steading adjoining. Rubble-built with ashlar

dressings, all painted, house with contrasting margins.

Slated roofs.

HOUSE: S elevation: 3 unequal bays, gabled central porch with

pilastered door margins and shaped skews; sash windows

throughout with 4-pane glazing pattern. Shallow raised quoins

broken at left where stonework pattern alters (relieving

arch/blocked archway in left bay at ground). Straight skews

with moulded skewputts; corniced end stacks. Main roofs swept

over full-width rear extension to courtyard.

STEADING: essentially 2 L-plan blocks; tall block adjoining

W gable of house has 3-bay stable to court in S range with

loft door central and altered S elevation; W range a barn,

main roof swept over projection to court housing barn door; square-headed cart opening to right.

Lower block is plainer and has modern car park. Cobbled

courtyard.

Statement of Interest

Said to have been built as an inn; situated on old Dumfries -

Annan road (present main road line late 18th century).
