Description

Earlier 19th century. 2-storey with raised basement, 3-bay, rectangular-plan, piend and platform-roofed classical house with Roman Doric-columned doorpiece and giant anta pilasters. Ashlar with squared rubble to sides and rear, and ashlar quoins. Base, band and partial ground floor cill courses, eaves cornice and blocking course.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: windows to outer bays at basement and ground floor, latter with oversailing stair and railings leading to Doric-columned doorpiece, 6-panelled timber door and batwing-astragalled semicircular fanlight to slightly advanced full-height centre bay, 3 smaller windows at 1st floor. Giant anta pilasters to outer angles.

NW ELEVATION: door in flat-roofed porch to centre bay with window to right and further door to left at basement, regular fenestration to each floor above.

SW ELEVATION: window to centre bay at basement, 3 windows to each floor above, those in outer bays blind.

NE ELEVATION: as SW elevation, but basement window also blind.

12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows. Slated. Broad, shouldered, cavetto-coped, ashlar wallhead stacks with full complement of cans.

INTERIOR: decorative plasterwork cornicing to principal ground floor rooms, with fine timber and gesso Adamesque, and marble fireplaces. Stone-flagged hall with columned screen opening into stone turnpike stair with cast-iron balusters and timber handrail. Massive stone-lintelled hearth to basement.

BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND GATES: rubble boundary walls. Corniced, flat-coped, square-section ashlar gatepiers with flanking decorative cast-iron pedestrian gates and outer piers to main entrance. Smaller pyramidally-coped piers with hooped ironwork gate to SW of house.

Statement of Interest

Probably built after 1836 as the NSA states under the heading of Modern Buildings "There are none in the parish worthy of particular remark." Laird or factor's house on the Auchtertool Estate which was acquired by Charles, 6th Earl of Moray, from John Skene, 4th Earl of Hallyards, in 1713.
