17th century. 3 single storey cottages form U-plan around yard to NE. Whinstone rubble; lime painted.
NE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: S wing: lean-to shed to left; timber boarded door to right. 3 windows to right; advanced flat-roofed porch in S angle; door to E; window to NW. W wing: 2 windows to second cottage; flat-roofed porch to N angle; door in left return; 2 windows to right. N wing: entrance door to third cottage; flanking windows; extra window to left. Lean-to shed to right; timber boarded door to left. Plain gable end walls.
SE ELEVATION: central door; 2 windows to each flank.
SW ELEVATION: 4 canted bay windows on stone bases to rear.
NW ELEVATION: not seen, 2000.
Replacement fenestration. Rear bay windows added later 19th century; polygonal slate roofs to bays windows. Replacement pantile roof to cottages; piended roof. 5 rendered ridge stacks.
INTERIORS: not seen, 2000.
A-Group with Broomhall; Broomhall Ice-House; Broomhall, Limekilns, 9 The Old Orchard; Broomhall, Limekilns, 9 The Old Orchard Garden, Broomhall Doocot; Broomhall Policies, Courthill Cottage; Broomhall Policies, East Lodge and Broomhall Policies, Former Brick Works. 2 bay windows to SW elevation appear in 1808 sketch. 2 more bay windows were added in the mid 19th Century. Built upon an outcrop of whinstone, the cottages resemble a Highland clachan. Built to house 6 families for Estate Work, Hillock belongs to the Broomhall Estate.
