Description

18th century. 2-storey; 5-bay rectangular-plan house; attached 2-storey, 3-bay house to E and outshot to S. White harling; ashlar stone surrounds; crowstepped gables.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: door at 3rd bay; window to right; glazed door to left; window to far left. Tall, narrow 1st floor windows; 3 to left of entrance door; right window centred above ground floor window. Single storey outshot to far right with door.

N ELEVATION: window in right gable; rear house gable set back to left with door.

E ELEVATION: central door; flanking windows; 3 1st floor windows centred above. Plain wall of earlier house set back to right.

S ELEVATION: 2 gables sit flush together; modern garage door to right; single 1st floor window above to right. Single ground and 1st floor windows to right in W gable; outshot to left; single window to right.

Predominantly 12-pane replacement timber sash and case windows with horns; 2 ground floor 16-pane timber sash and case windows to principal elevation. Crowstepped gables to earlier house with moulded skewputts; exposed stonework to S crowsteps; raised flat coping to E house gables. Double pitched roof; red clay pantile; corniced gable apex stacks to W house; 1 S gable apex stack to E house; polygonal clay cans.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1999.

GARDEN WALL

Rubble garden wall extends N-wards from N gable running eastwards and S. Tall coped chimney stack in NW apex.

Statement of Interest

Usually the upper floor windows of vernacular buildings are smaller than the ground floor windows, however the 1st floor windows of the W elevation of Academy Cottage are as tall, but narrower than the near-square ground floor windows, possibly indicating a former industrial use for the building. A later 3-bay house was attached to the rear and Academy Cottage is now one residence. Academy Square is so called because the King's Cellar, which borders the N of the square was once used as a school. Academy Cottage forms the E border of the square.
