Description

18th century. 2-storey house. White harling; ashlar surrounds to openings and quoins.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: door to left; central forestair; stone steps and metal hand rail; plank door to opening under stairs; decorative metal air vent above right; glazed and fixed timber door at 1st floor. Ground and 1st floor windows to right.

S ELEVATION: 2 ground and 1st floor windows. 2 square niches above in gable. 2-faced corner sundial at SE angle, 1st floor, dated 1689 with gnomons to S and E.

N ELEVATION: plain elevation; 2 1st floor windows to left.

W ELEVATION: attached to 10 Academy Square.

Some timber sash and case windows with horns; some timber, centrally pivoted windows. Modern pantiles; crowstepped S gable wallhead; beaked skewputts, stone gable apex stack to S; circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1999.

Statement of Interest

Hope Cottage forms part of the W border of the square; its S gable fronts the Main Street roadside. Academy Square is so called because the King's Cellar which borders the N of the square was once used as a school.
