Description

Private chapel with crypt begun by James A Morris of Ayr,
architect, circa 1909 but completed circa 1928 to design of
Sir Robert Lorimer. T-plan. Stugged and snecked red ashlar,
polished dressings. 2-leaf oak door in west gable with roll-
moulded depressed ogee head and upper jambs, scrolled
skewputts; V-channelled clasping pilasters at east gable
project above eaves level, round-headed east window with
uncarved key-stone and impost blocks, apex cross finial.
Buttress and 2 windows at west end of south wall. Porch/
transept against north wall has west-facing door with
partially roll-moulded jambs extending to ogee lintel: wall
head stack at east, steps below to crypt. Skews; slate roofs.
Interior: red ashlar walls, stone-flagged floor, boarded
ceilings, leaded east window: chapel has wide, segmental-
arched screen to transept and at west door, former with
wooden rails.

Statement of Interest

No longer in ecclesiastical use, although maintained by

family trust. Built for R Y Pickering of Conheath; crypt

first used for Ellen Caldwell Pickering (d 1909).
