Description

Rebuilt circa 1836-40. Long quay built along east bank of
River Nith; pier projects at north, and harbour inlet formed
alongside; long south face forms bank. All built of neatly-
coursed, large red ashlar blocks. Steps to waterside on both
pier and inlet. Cast-iron and timber bollards. Stream
entering inlet from north intended to prevent silting.

Statement of Interest

Built as a port for Dumfries, formerly with customs house

and warehouses. Disused since 1939; harbour inlet now partly

silted, but used by pleasure craft Brick transit sheds built

on quay not included in listing.
