Description

Probably 18th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan house with single storey, 3-bay ancillary structure adjoined at rear; further single storey ancillary structures to front; separate single storey range adjoined to side (W). Whitewashed harl; rendered dressings. Quoin strips; chamfered corner to SE; projecting cills throughout.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: boarded timber door centred at ground; consoled canopy; single window aligned at 1st floor. Single windows at both floors to left. Single window at ground in bay to right; bipartite window above. Projecting single storey range adjoined to right.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-bay gable end with single windows at ground; single window at 1st floor to right; squat attic lights in both bays above. Exterior stair to left accessing 1st floor entrance and flat-roofed block linking house and rear ancillary structure.

Plate glass and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows (some modern replacements). Steeply pitched pantiled roof; crowstepped gables; moulded skewputts (carved head to SE corner). Brick-built apex stacks; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

ANCILLARY STRUCTURE TO REAR: harl-pointed rubble; rubble and red brick dressings. E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: boarded timber door centred at ground. S (GARDEN) ELEVATION: single windows in all 3 bays. Pantiled mono-pitched roof; cast-iron rainwater goods. INTERIOR: not seen 1999.

ANCILLARY STRUCTURES TO FRONT: flat-roofed, single storey structure to NW. Lower gabled structure adjoined to NE; corrugated-iron roof. INTERIORS: not seen 1999.

BOUNDARY WALLS: rubble walls partially enclosing site.

Statement of Interest

An interesting group of buildings thought to date from the 18th century - the house's steeply-pitched, pantiled roof indicating its early age. The single storey range adjoined to the side (W) is now (1999) in separate ownership and listed separately - see 'Coldingham, School Road, Woodbine Cottage, Ancillary Structure/Workshop'.
