Description

Later 19th century with later alterations. Single storey 3-bay whinstone and sandstone rubble kennel master?s house with polished ashlar dressings and some rendered dressings; single storey sandstone and whinstone rubble rectangular-planned small kennel to NW, with rubble wall to forecourt with vermiculated dressings and cast-iron gates and railings. Rubble with coped round-arched water tank set in raised reservoir with small boarded door. Slightly raised long and short quoins to house.

HOUSE: SE ELEVATION: 3 steps to deep-set glazed panelled door to centre with rectangular plate glass fanlight above. Bipartite window in bay to right. Bay to left advanced and gabled with canted window with half-piended slate roof. NW ELEVATION: 4-bay. Modern lean-to porch addition to outer left. Later lean-to addition to outer right. Window to each of inner bays. Gable to each 2-bay group.

4-pane upper and 2-pane lower timber sash and case windows. Slate roof with exposed rafters and timber eaves board. Terracotta ridge tiles and finials. Rendered stacks.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1995.

KENNELS: symmetrical, 4-bay. Door to each inner bay with rectangular fanlight above. Slate piended roof. Window at eaves of outer bays. OUTBUILDING TO W: timber with corrugated iron roof.

Statement of Interest

The water tank is found to W of kennels. The 1857 map would suggest that an earlier building was erected upon this site, although it was at that time used as a sawmill. The kennel was at that time to be found to E of the road leading from the stableblock to the walled garden and the main road.
