Description

Early 19th century with later alterations. Asymmetrical French Gothic entrance screen with lodge house to NW. Squared sandstone with droved ashlar dressings; rubble to rear.

SW ELEVATION: round-arched carriage entrance at centre flanked by buttresses, corbelled string course; octagonal shafts with ogeed fish-scale surmounted by caps flanking crowstepped, ball-finialled gable with diminutive round-arched opening over rectangular tablet. Roll-topped coped wall to either side. Square-planned ogee-roofed pavilion to the right with round-arched bipartite window to centre. Circular-section 2-storey tower to left of centre with corbelled parapet; arrow window at 1st floor. Roll-topped coping to wall to outer left with shouldered wallhead stack and bipartite round-arched window.

NW ELEVATION: 4-bay. Boarded door to inner right. Bay to inner left advanced with timber mullioned window. Window to outer right. Timber mullioned window in bay to outer left at ground of tower (effectively in re-entrant angle).

SE ELEVATION: later monopitch addition to inner left and to right, with bipartite window to inner right; later glazed door to outer right. Bipartite window to outer left.

8-pane timber sash and case windows. Diamond-paned timber windows to SW elevation. Slate half-piended roof to lodge. Fish-scale slates to square-plan pavilion and tower. Finials to both. Rendered stack to NW. Shouldered, ashlar, coped wallhead stack to SW elevation.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1995.

GATES: ornamental cast-iron 2-leaf gates to entrance.

BOUNDARY WALLS: rubble with rounded coping. Small turrets to either side of gateway, near road.

Statement of Interest

The lodge is an apparently random composition of elements and may well have been designed by an amateur. There is a drawing surviving (a photograph of which can be seen at the NMRS) not for this particular design but similar, by an amateur. However, despite the possibly unsatisfactory massing of volumes, the lodge is of great importance to the locality as it is set back from the main road from the west into Duns and is one of the most prominent and memorable architectural statements visible to the public within the area.
