Description

Loch Lomond And Trossachs National Park Planning Authority

1779-80. Bridge of 2 segmental arches with triangular cutwaters to both elevations of central pier. The parapet is in a slightly different coloured stone, which indicates that it has probably been rebuilt at some point.

Materials: random rubble; roughly dressed stones to arches; flat cope stones to parapet.

Statement of Interest

This bridge was paid for by the Commissioners of Annexed Estates, and several papers relating to its construction are held at the National Archives (see References). The tenants of Balquhidder petitioned the Commissioners for a bridge in February 1779, and by March that year plans had been drawn up (signed by Patrick McInnes, who was presumably employed by the commissioners) and an estimate prepared. By July 1780 building was well under way. The cost of the bridge came to about 106 pounds. It is very similar in design to Stronvar Bridge (near Balquhidder) which was built at the same time. It is unusual to be able to put a precise date on an 18th century bridge of this type, and to have plans as well is even rarer: it therefore has considerable importance in informing the studies of other bridges.
