Probably circa 1797. 2-storey, 3-bay, T-plan gabled traditional farmhouse with 20th century glazed, T-braced, bargeboarded central extension to principal (SE) elevation and detached steading block to NE. Harled random rubble. Regular fenestration.
Predominantly 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Ashlar-coped gablehead stacks with thackstanes and clay cans. Grey slate roofs with rooflights. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: stone U-plan central staircase with nosing continuing down sides of risers.
STEADING: single storey, steep piend-roofed, U-plan steading block. Timber-boarded doors.
A traditional farmhouse occupying a prominent position in the rural landscape and relatively little-altered externally. A porch in the position of the current extension to the middle of the principal elevation is shown is shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map (1854-9), but the existing structure appears to be later 20th century. 'Auchensoule' is shown on Andrew Armstrong's New Map of Ayrshire (1774), but the current buildings are presumably the dwelling house, barn, byre and stables at Auchensoul, all slated, mentioned in the Edinburgh Evening Courant of 9 June 1800 as having been built 'about three years', as their proportions and style are consistent with such a date.
