Dated 1722. Georgian. Oblong block linked by quadrant wings
to 2 outlying pavilions. Harled. Slate roofs. MAIN BLOCK:
2 storeys and attic; 3 windows wide. Piended roof with
platform top. Ashlar chimneys. Piended dormers. Gabled
porch; Palladian window. Inset over door inscribed "M.M./B.C.
1722.".
PAVILIONS: 1 storey and attic. Piended roofs. Palladian
windows to fore-court. 1-storey flat-roofed additions at
rear of wings. Long 1-storey E. wings added to front
(c. 1830) and rear (c. 1890): Upper storey added (c. 1910)
forming a court.
Built on site of St. Oran's Chapel for Malcolm McNeill
(d. 1742), who had acquired Colonsay and Oransay from
Earl of Argyll 1701. Acquired by Donald Smith, 1st Baron
Strathcona 1904.
