Statement of Interest

Nos 1 and 2-7 were feued to Robert Montgomerie, June 1773

and 1774.

For layout of village see OSA v.II p.120 Though no individual

building can be accounted in Category A, the village as a

whole must be regarded very definitely as Category A. It is

a most important example of late 18th century planning and

its buildings are in complete scale and harmony with the lay

out. The plan was conceived in 1769 by Alexander Montgomery

10th Earl of Eglinton (d.1769) and finished by the 11th Earl

about 1797. With a few exceptions all the houses date from

this period or shortly after it. The Eglinton family sold

Eaglesham to A<> & Jas Gilmour in 18<> The Cotton Mill on

the Common was destroyed by fire in 1876. The Gilmours had a

mansion Eaglesham House, one mile to North of Village.
