Description

Later 19th century. Single storey and attic 3-bay cottage. Roughly squared and pinned rubble. Symmetrical SE (principal) elevation with central 2-leaf timber panel door with upper panels glazed and rustic gabled porch. Pair of piended and canted dormers to attic. Timber and glazed lean-to and cat-slide dormer to NW (rear) elevation.

Replacement timber 4-pane sash and case windows. Grey slate, gable stacks.

INTERIOR: retains original room plan of 2 rooms over 2 with central staircase aligned with length of cottage. Timber panelling throughout ground floor, either dado or double height. Service bells remain in situ.

Statement of Interest

Inver Cottage is one of a group of cottages set in a prominent position on Auchendryne Square, next to St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church and as such contributes positively to the character of the village. The use of traditional local materials, most obviously granite rubble, is clearly apparent. Furthermore the pond to the rear of the property was formerly the quarry where stone for the construction of the church was sourced.

The cottage has lost its harl since the last list description (1991)

Local knowledge suggests that the internal timber panelling comes from Mar Lodge.

Historically Inver Cottage has had close connections to the Catholic Church next door, known as Chapelgate when first built, the cottage was home to the caretaker of the church.
