Description

Circa 1790. A picturesque 2-storey, 3-bay cottage with projecting polygonal centre bay with Gothick detailing, built on bank of Dipple Burn. Whitewashed and lined stugged rubble, ashlar margins, hoodmoulds at ground floor. 4-pane sash and case glazing, grey slates to piended roof with broad central stack.

FRONT ELEVATION: advanced, canted, 2-storey centre bay with pointed arched doorway, recessed 4-panelled door, windows on return, window at 1st floor. Windows to outer bays. 3 1st floor windows breaking eaves in gabled dormerheads. Lean-to additions at sides, lower 2-storey piended wing adjoining to right at rear.

Statement of Interest

Mentioned in the OS Name Book as a property of Sir James Boswell, and associated with the Auchinleck House Estate. A house named Barnsdale appears on General Roy's Map of 1755; the present house was probably built on its site.
