Description

William Leiper, circa 1871.

FARMHOUSE: singel storey and attic. Random rubble with sandstone dressings.

ELEVATION TO ROADWAY: 3-bay, each bay with open eaved gable, depressed and entrance to left of centre bay, with timber-mullioned and transomed canted bay on ground floor in L bay, wooden mullioned and transomed bipartites in centre and R bays with relieving arches above, cill course. Attic windows in all gables bipartites mullioned with cill course. porch under catslide roof to R.

STEADING: U-plan, single storey and attic block with horse engine house and detached barn. Random rubble with sandstone dressingss, irregular fenestration. Centre range with prominent skylights, inner faces of side ranges have gablet ventilators. Threshing barn has dormer hoist door under slated gable on outer face.

HORSE ENGINE HOUSE: polygonal roof on stone piers with wide openings. Abuts threshing barn.

DETACHED BARN: linked to main range by later buildings. Stone base with 2 tiers of slit ventilators, vertically slatted wooden band below piended roof.

ROOFS: all slated, with open eaves and prominent rafter ends.

Statement of Interest

Cornhill House, for which this was the Home Farm, was built by Alex kay in 1871. This is one of 2 steadings known to have been designed by Leiper, the other being at Glendarvel House, Kilmodan, Argyll and Bute District.
