Description

Post 1854. Single storey, L-plan house facing N with wing extending to N at rear; formerly a forge. Squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and hood moulds, rubble sides and rear. 4-bay; door to right of advanced gabled bay with window at ground and slip opening to attic. 2 windows to right at ground. Window at ground and small light to attic of E gable end; doorway to slightly recessed wing with bipartite to left, single window to right. Single window at ground to E gable end. Single storey additions at rear, and modern attic extension. Sash and case windows with 12 lying-pane glazing pattern. Crowstepped gables, grey slates, ashlar coped paired diamond stacks. Sundial in garden dated 1746, with square and heart motifs. Ashlar; remounted.

Statement of Interest

House in the style of other Luffness Estate housing; Aberlady Mains Cottages, Luffness Kennels, Luffness Mains Cottages, all listed separately. Said to have been a smithy, the house is sited to the N of an old quarry and the remains of Luffness Convent, the 13th century Carmelite Friary (Inventory No 1). House does not appear on OS Map 1854.
