Description

Dated 1706; various additions and alterations including earlier 19th fcentury facade to Kirk Street. 3-storey, entering at 1st floor at Kirke Street, rectangular-plan, domestic and shop premises adjoining Powmillon Burn. Random rubble, polished and stugged ashlar and stugged snecked rubble to Kirk Street, brick addition to 2nd floor at rear, all painted; gabled and piended slate roof. Mostly 12-pane timber sash and case windows to side and rear elevations. 2-pane bipartite to brick addition, original plate glass shop windows to Kirk Street, 4-pane sash and case at upper floor with architraves.

KIRK STREET ELEVATION: asymmetrical. 2 doors with fanlights and 2 shop windows to right, cornice and 2 windows at first floor, margined angles and wallhead; aproned shop window to left, door at recessed bowed angle at far left both with finely moulded architraves, band course at 1st floor and wallhead, margined angles, corniced parapet with corniced and shouldered octagonal stack.

SIDE ELEVATION: 2 windows at ground floor, 1 at 1st and 2nd, asymmetrically placeed; blocked door at 1st floor off-centre right with rendered-over moulded architraves, lintel inscribed 'WL 1706'; blocked window to roofspace. Lower and narrower bay to right with window at ground floor.

REAR ELEVATION: gable to right, door to ground floor right, 2 windows to 1st floor, 1 window to 2nd floor, blocked oculus to roofspace; bay to left, door and window to ground floor, winmdow to 1st floor, bipartite to 2nd floor.

Statement of Interest

The building may have been a mill, given its burnside situation. The second floor brick addition to the rear was reputedly built for Strathaven's first telephone exchange in the early 20th century.
