Description

Possibly Alexander Ross, later 19th century Gothic, tall
rectangular gabled mausoleum orientated east/west; grey
tooled ashlar with contrasting sandstone ashlar dressings.
Pointed headed hoodmoulded entrance in centre of east gable
with moulded architraves and slender nook shafts with
attenuated stiff leaf capitals; decorative cast-iron gate and
screen. Large rose window with geometric tracery above.
Large rear pointed-headed 3-light window with slender columns
as mullions and corresponding slender nookshafts; shaped
blind occulus above. Base course; diagonal buttresses;
corbelled eaves cornice; flat skews; apex cross at east
gable; banded fishscale slate roof.
Interior; single floor tomb in centre of black and white
tiled floor; polished ashlar walls with coat of arms inserted
in south wall. Stained glass survives in outer lights of
west window. 4 tombs with Celtic cross headstones outside
door at east of mausoleum.

Statement of Interest

Commanding site on rise above Loch Leven. Burial place of

the Camerons of Fassifern and Callert: Various members of

Cameron and Fairfax-Lucy family buried outside mausoleum.

(Cameron of Callert's daughter married a Fairfax-Lucy of

Charlecote, Oxfordshire).
