Description

Circa 1840. Quadrangular stable court, with 2-storey
cartshed and hayloft, converted for residential
purposes. Red sandstone rubble with plain and stugged
ashlar dressings. Crowsteps and beak skewputts.
E RANGE: crowstepped gabled pend advanced at centre
with piers flanking segmental archway, blind ventilation
slit at apex and stone finial. 1 window in each flanking
bay, and wide segmental carriage arches in outer bays,
currently glazed.
W RANGE: 2-storey former hayloft block at centre, 3
segmental carriage arches to courtyard elevation with
cast-iron columns, blocked as window and door; hayloft
door altered to window and with windows flanking;
square, louvred timber ventilator at centre with slated
spire and decorative weathervane. Modern conservatory
added to exterior of outer bay to right, window to outer
left. Lean-to kennel with parapet and railings to court
adjoined to centre, and former pigsties(?) to right.
N AND S RANGES: variety of windows, doors and loft
openings, much altered. Courtyard elevations largely
with glazed doorways and windows, serving chalet
accommodation. Variety of glazing patterns. Some
12-pane sash and case windows, some timber
diamond-pane casements. Grey slates. Ridge stacks,
some altered.

Statement of Interest

Probably erected circa 1840 by Archibald Broun who

executed a series of works at Johnstounburn, including

the gate lodge (listed separately), which bears similar

details. Listed category C(S) despite conversion for

retention of general lines of coach house, and in

relation to Johnstounburn House Hotel, for which it

provides additional accommodation. Further information
