Description

Opened 1879 with additions 1884. W C Joass further additions 1900-1.

Large purpose-built hotel, 3-storey and attic gabled hotel, asymmetrical 9-bay NW entrance front. Coursed grey rubble, contrasting tooled ashlar dressings. Wide projecting arched porte archere with decorative cast-iron balastrade into which glazed porch inserted at right of building. Projecting wing (addition probably 1900-1) at NE with canted

end rising 3 storeys with bipartites in ground and 1st floors gabled dormer heads to 2nd floor windows. 2-pane glazing; gabled dormer heads piended dormers; end and ridge stacks with batteries of tall chimney cans; projecting slate roofs.

Gate Piers; pair square rusticated ashlar gate piers with square caps copped by diminutive crenellated detailing. Gate piers flanked by low coped quadrants with decorative cast-iron railings.

W C Joass was possibly the architect for the main building. See Tender Notice 1873 for large hotel.
