Circa 1830. Large single storey villa over raised basement,
with some later attic fenestration in N elevation. Coursed
rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings.
N entrance front; tetrastyle portico fronts advanced
centre 3 bays; centre pilastered doorpiece with monogramed
cartouche with coat of arms above, small flanking attic
windows. 3 bays either side of portico have later raised
and pedimented dormers; advanced outer 2-bay wings with lower
roof level extend with 5-bay return elevations E and W.
S garden elevation; 7-bay frontage with wide projecting bowed
3-window centre bay with shalllow bowed piended roof fronted
by shallow terrace; advanced canted 3-window outer bays with
lower piended roofs. Front and some W return gable windows
have decorative cast-iron guards.
2- and 4-pane glazing, though some 9- and 12-pane survives in
raised basement. Symmetrical corniced stacks with decorative
pottery cans; piended roofs, with platform and centre domed
roof light to central block. Various service wings extend at
east, masked from S front by high coped wall fronted by
range of glass houses.
2-storey Italianate water tower.
Interior: entrance hall leads to top lit central hall under
dome with decorative plaster ribbing and festoons; coffered
plaster ceilings to main public rooms; corniced and moulded
door pieces; panelled doors and dados; black marble chimney
piece in former dining room; vaulted corridors.
Formerly named Darochville. By 1835 "the seat of Lady
Saltoun". Bought by Sir John Ramsden in 1871 and by mid 1890s
was owned by Charles Fountaine Walker whose monogram is
above front door.
