Description

James Gillespie (Graham) c 1820 for David Gillespie. Main block 2-storey basement and attic, 6-window ashlar S front, centre 2 advanced with tall 4-column single-storey R doric portico, fanlight doorpiece. Top cornice and plain parapet, fluted at centre. N. front rubble-built with margins, 3-window, centre bays advanced and pedimented. Simple distinctively detailed interior, large entrance hall with screen of simulated scagliola columns (R-doric) and imperial stair-case beyond.

Statement of Interest

No plans for the Gillespie house survive. There is an earlier scheme for a house of similar size signed SC and an elevation of a tall early 18th century house signed by James Craig 1770 when improvement were made. Nothing of this intermediate house appears to survive.
