Description

Probably 17th century. Tall, square gabled dovecote. Harled rubble, tooled and carved red sandstone ashlar dressings. Low doorway in centre of E elevation; later square vent slapped in W wall. 2 sets of flight holes, pierced in red sandstone panels fronted by alighting ledges in S gable. String course moulded on underside, encircles building at 2/3rd height and two further string courses span N and S gables, the lower with simple cavetto underside and the upper with moulded and filleted profile. Small circular cabled moulded vent in centre of N gable (now blocked); crowsteps; carved apex finials.

INTERIOR: interior lined with 512 square tooled rubble nesting boxes, commencing 1.17m (3'10") above floor level.

Statement of Interest

There is no documentary evidence for the Craigston dovecote before 1747, when it appears on an estate plan. The carved detailing seems 17th century in character, suggesting it is nearer in date to the castle, constructed 1604-7.
