Description

Circa 1830. Roughly rectangular rubble walled garden, brick lined throughout; red Turiff sandstone tooled and shaped ashlar cope. (?later, circa 1850) grey granite ashlar finialled doorpiece frames pedestrian entrance in NE wall of garden; studded and ribbed plank door. Wide segmental-headed entrance at rear of former stables.

Range of contemporary cast-iron framed glasshouses abut SW facing wall within garden, in 3 sections constructed on red ashlar plinth. Front is supported by slender cast-iron pilasters, taller in central section and supporting delicate scroll decorated wallhead cornice.

Re-set portion of 17th century lintel or overmantel in NW exterior wallface.

Statement of Interest

Re-set lintel inscribed MY HOVP IS IN THE LORD. The glasshouses are a rare survival of unusually wide span.
